Avast Antivirus uses a database of known Virus definitions to identify malware and other threats on your PC, which is why it is important to ensure the Virus definitions are regularly updated. The application refers to the user interface and all components in Avast Antivirus. Updates to the application provide bug fixes and general improvements.

You can disable IPv6 in the Mail Shield preferences to fix problems with sending and receiving e-mail. Note: this solution does not work on all systems. Click the Avast Menu bar and select Open Avast. 'Avast' is the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial 'security' products for the Mac. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it may send personal data (such as web browsing history and the contents of email messages) back to the developer without your knowledge, give false warnings, destabilize and slow down the computer, expose you to network attack, and corrupt. I just got Avast and set it to do a full system scan daily at 11:30 PM (23:30) and I checked the box that says “Wake up the system to start the scan (if in sleep mode)”. However, the scans don’t seem to be happening, and instead happen sometime after I start using the computer in the morning.

By default, Avast Antivirus is set to update the Virus definitions and application automatically whenever a new version is available. We strongly recommend you keep automatic updates enabled.

Manually update Virus definitions

1. Right-click the Avast icon in your system tray and select Update ▸ Engine and virus definitions.
2. If Avast doesn't begin checking for updates automatically, click Check For Updates.
3. Wait while Avast checks for virus definition updates.
4. When the update is complete, you will see that Virus definitions are up to date.
5. If you are asked to restart your PC, click Restart Now to reboot immediately.

Manually update the application

1. Right-click the Avast icon in your system tray and select Update ▸ Program.
2. If Avast doesn't begin checking for updates automatically, click Check For Updates.
3. When the update is complete, you will see that Your application is up to date.
4. If you are asked to restart your PC, click Restart Now to reboot immediately.

Manage automatic Virus definition updates

1. Open the Avast user interface and click ☰Menu ▸ Settings.
2. Ensure General is selected in the left panel, then click Update.
3. In the Virus definitions section, click More options, then tick your preferred option:
   • Automatic update (enabled by default): updates are downloaded and installed automatically on a regular basis. No actions are required from you.
   • Ask when an update is available: notifies you when an update is available. Your confirmation is required to complete the update.
   • Manual update (not recommended): updates are not automatically installed and you are not notified when a new update is available.
   • Enable streaming update (enabled by default): downloads micro-updates continuously as new malware is discovered.

Manage automatic application updates

1. Open the Avast user interface and click ☰Menu ▸ Settings.
2. Ensure General is selected in the left panel, then click Update.
3. In the application section, click More options, then tick your preferred option:
   • Automatic update (enabled by default): updates are regularly downloaded and installed. No actions are required from you.
   • Ask when update is downloaded: notifies you when updates are downloaded. Your confirmation is required to complete the update.
   • Ask when an update is available: notifies you when updates are available (before downloading). To receive the update, you need to start the download and installation process manually.
   • Manual update (not recommended): updates are not automatically installed and you are not notified when a new update is available.

Configure proxy settings

The proxy settings section is for users who connect to the internet through a proxy server. This section allows you to adjust your proxy settings to avoid issues with downloading Virus definitions and application updates.

If you connect directly to the internet, you can ignore this section as the Use specific proxy server option is disabled by default.

To configure proxy settings for application updates:

1. Tick the box next to Use specific proxy server and type your proxy details into the relevant text box.
   • Type: select HTTP or SOCKS4.
   • Address: type the address of your proxy server.
   • Type of authentication: if the proxy server requires authentication, specify the type and enter the Username and Password.
   If you do not know your proxy details, contact your network administrator or your internet service provider (ISP).

So yeah, just noticed this shortcut appear out of nowhere on my desktop.

Following it back to it's folder - 'SZBrowser' subfolder in the main Avast install directory - I think it's had 'the stuff' on my machine for a couple of weeks (just from looking at dates and things) and only just decided to install.

Needless to say, I don't much appreciate this.

I've quite happily copped the increase in notifications about particular sales, and the inserting a signature into my e-mails wasn't particularly annoying (as I promptly disabled it), but this - installing something without telling me - isn't cool at all.
