When the Avast dialog box asks you to Connect, click the little black triangle next to the word Connect, then choose Optimal from the dropdown menu. Then click Connect. Only after you have truly connected to the Avast network will Avast's menu options appear, along the upper left of your screen. Click the File menu and choose Uninstall.
