Avira recently rolled out its new 201 7 Avira free edition (originally introduced in 2015). Avast has now released their 2017 “anti virus pro” service, which we’ve updated this comparison with . These two antivirus solutions will be compared side-by-side to see which offers the best protection to consumers. Four categories will be looked at including:

• User Interface
• Protection
• Performance
• Features

Normally, price is also a category that plays into the overall “grade” of a given antivirus product. Since both of these antivirus products are completely free to use for consumers, this factor is not included in the comparison.

It is also worth noting that both companies do offer more inclusive protection for a price that is comparable to offerings from Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, and other big-name antivirus companies.

You may consider upgrading to the paid versions of these programs if you enjoy the product simply because some key features are intentionally left out to promote revenue-generating products. A good example of this is that automatic updates are not available on Avast Free Antivirus. Rather, that feature is reserved for the Internet Security and Premier editions.

In fact, many people choose to try the free version of these products before purchasing a premium license. The interface of both free and premium versions are identical and basic functionality remains the same. This is an excellent way to check for potential compatibility issues and other concerns prior to paying for the non-refundable license fee.

Although both of these products share the same interface with their pay for use counterparts, this doesn’t necessarily mean users are receiving a well laid out interface.

Avira offers an interface that looks like slightly outdated software when used on the Windows 7 platform. In Windows 8, the interface looks outright old and does not provide a visually appealing experience for users of any Avira products (free or premium).

, Avast has made noticeable improvements to its interface. There are only three “shields” that users interact with regularly. This is especially important for users who are not particularly acquainted with antivirus protection programs. Avast has done an excellent job of making its solution less intimidating and easier to navigate. Many of the more advanced features are more easily accessible in Avira; however, the antiquated interface keeps it from getting top marks in this category.

Avast wins this category with a powerful, modern, and easy to use interface that is on par with or better than most of its competition.

Although both free product offerings provide adequate virus protection, it seems that Avira lacks the ability to detect some of the more serious and complex threats that plague the Internet today. Independent testing has shown that Avast consistently detects approximately 22% more serious threats than Avira, which only scored a 70% detection rate throughout most independent testing. This is far below the 92% exhibited by Avast and many other products such as Norton Internet Security.

Although Avira does offer better virus protection than some other free alternatives, the anti-virus software has been historically plagued by high false positive detection rates. Even though these issues are not fixed for 2014, it is obvious that Avira has taken some time to reduce the number of false positive detections compared to releases of the last few years.

Avast has further set itself apart from Avira because of new features such as DeepScreen. This feature allows the software to automatically create a sandbox environment for unknown files until it can determine whether or not they are malicious. This is a feature that is simply not offered in the free version of Avira.

A host of new features and one of the highest detection rates in the industry give Avast another checkmark as the winner of this category.

There is no clear winner in the performance category. Both Avira and Avast are extremely lightweight and are not likely to impact system performance at all; even when using older equipment.

For 2015, Avast has drastically reduced the size of the downloadable product by implementing a stub installer. This has stayed the same with their 2015 version as well. The installation is faster and uses fewer resources than previous versions; however, this stub installer does require an Internet connection for successful completion. If a machine is already infected by malware, installing via a stub installer can be nearly impossible.

Please note that Avira also uses a stub installer and can present the same issues on malware-infested systems.

In the Performance category, Avira fails for a single reason. There have been multiple reports of system crashes after a successful Avira installation. This is attributed to the aggressive installation program that searches for other security suites before completing its own installation process. Although this is relatively common within antivirus solutions, the problem is that Avira’s installer tends to leave old registry keys that can even result in the notorious Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Although neither product will slow down the average home computer noticeably, the potential for installation issues means that Avast wins yet another category when compared with Avira.

Both products offer new features for 2014 in the hopes of differentiating themselves from one another and the rest of the competition. Since both products are free, most users look to these included features as a primary “selling” point when shopping these two products.

• DeepScreen technology is an advanced sandbox that can protect your computer from suspicious files automatically.

• SafeZone automatically opens banking websites in a protected environment to mitigate risks caused by key logging software or phishing scams.

• Experts Market is a crowd sourced tech support forum where Avira users can sell their expertise to other Avira users. Tech support for free antivirus programs is often negligible at best, so the addition of the Experts Market is a serious bonus for budget conscious users not interested in spending lots of money for tech support.

• WebGuard aggressively searches for sites that could be hosting malware before they are loaded onto the computer. This is another feature available directly from the Avira toolbar and can prevent many “drive-by download” attacks.

The following is a quick look at the key advantages that separate these two services, in order to help make the distinction more clear.

Just because an antivirus product is free doesn’t necessarily mean it forgoes many of the premium features that are expected in much more expensive solutions. Avira is the epitome of the “you get what you pay for” cliché because it is a very limited product. Obviously, it is better than having no antivirus protection at all; however, Avast provides one of the best detection rates in the business and many premium features for no additional cost.

Avast offers the best free antivirus protection around – it is even comparable or better than many premium products in terms of detection rates and available features. However, Avast does leave one key feature out of its free offering: automatic virus definition updates. Although they can be done manually, this is easy to forget and can leave your computer vulnerable to attack if left undone.

The best way to figure out which of these two products is best for you is to try them. Since both products are free, you are not really risking very much. You may even opt to choose one of the premium options available from these companies to take advantage of extra features not found in the free versions.

Bottom Line: If I had to choose, I’d definitely go with Avast (see here for pricing). It’s not a huge difference, but Avast’s total package is enough to give it the edge here.

When it comes to free antivirus for Windows computer, your friends will mostly recommend you either Avast Free Antivirus 2019, AVG AntiVirus FREE 2019, or Avira Free Antivirus 2019. But which one of them is the best? All are completely for free and offers plenty of advanced features. We’ll take a look at details on Avast and AVG.

Two biggest competitors, Avast and AVG, are today a single company. In October 2016 Avast acquired AVG company for $1.3B. From the end-user point of view, there is no change, both brands continue to coexist together. However, they use the same engine and technology in the background – the one from Avast. Feature-wise there are small differences, let’s take a closer look.

Feature Comparison Table – Does AVG Offer More Than Avast?

Both Avast and AVG are offering solid protection against viruses, spyware, malware, rootkits and even ransomware which is a big topic now. Plus you will be secured while browsing online, chatting on Facebook, or watching videos on YouTube. Also, they will protect and scan your incoming and outgoing e-mails if you are using an e-mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird. If you’re a gamer, you can relax – both antivirus solutions offer smart gaming mode and keep themselves silent.

With Avast you will get some cool features like Wi-Fi Inspector (formerly called Home Network Security), which scans your home network, Wi-Fi connection, and routers. An easy-to-use tool called Browser Cleanup for removing unwanted toolbars from your browser. Software Updater for monitoring the up-to-date status of the other software like browser, Java, Adobe Reader, etc. And you can ask your IT friend to fix your computer via the secured remote connection.

However, there are some differences. AVG offers spying and data theft protection controlling what kind of data you are sharing with the other applications, and File Shredder which can permanently delete your sensitive information, so they can’t be restored. A similar feature called Data Shredder is available also in Avast, but only in the top-tier product Avast Premier, not in the free one.

A big plus for AVG is that you don’t need to register or give out any personal information. You can just download, install, and keep using it. With Avast you have to activate the product within the first 30 days, and then once a year.

Impact on the System Resources – Which Product is Lighter?

We have measured the impact on the system resources using two ways:

1. How long does the computer to boot into Windows desktop while the AVG or Avast is installed
2. How does the computer perform in various areas (CPU, Graphics, Memory and Disk operations) while the AVG or Avast is installed

In the boot time test where less is better, it took only 28 seconds (on average) to load Windows desktop when Avast Free Antivirus was installed. The same operation took 33 seconds (on average) when AVG AntiVirus FREE was installed. Default boot-time without any antivirus solution in place took 20 seconds. So according to our testing, Windows loads faster with Avast.

In the second area, we have tested computer performance in various areas and impact of the AVG or Avast on the results. Test results (higher is better) were practically the same for both products, 2,116 points for Avast and 2,115 points for AVG. The default performance without any antivirus installed was 2,150 points. So the overall impact on the system performance is really low for both products.

Final performance test results are highlighted in the chart below. You can clearly see the difference between no antivirus and Avast or AVG present. Please note the vertical axis ‘Performance Score‘ is not starting from 0, but from 2,110 to clearly show the small differences.

User Interface – Is Avast Easier to use Than AVG?

Avast user interface is really nice and clear. There is only one main action leading to the Smart Scan, which runs all seven Avast scans: compatibility, viruses, outdated software, browser add-ons, router issues, performance, and weak passwords. The green button ‘UPGRADE‘ (or ‘ACTIVATE‘) leads to a comparison table of Avast Free Antivirus and Avast premium product (Avast Internet Security).

The status is also indicated by color when green obviously means ‘You are protected’ (note AVG is using the exact same term). Also, you are assured that ‘Everything is up-to-date‘. The top menu is easy to navigate and structured in fours groups – Scan, Tools, Passwords, and Store. What is pretty annoying is the top menu disappears every time you go from the home screen and you need to click on ‘Menu‘ to get it back.

Same as AVG, also Avast is using the bottom space for the up-sell offers.

AVG user interface is quite busy compared to Avast. When everything is fine, you will see green tick marks with the message ‘You are protected‘. The interface will go red if there will be some issue. What is nice is when some of the shields are disabled, you will see immediately which ones as they will also turn in red.

AVG AntiVirus FREE 2019 – User Interface

The main tiles show you the status of the specific shield protection. If you are looking for a scan, it’s the less visible button ‘Scan now‘. The ‘Fix performance’ button sounds pretty interesting, but you need to download other product (AVG PC TuneUp) to actually fix the performance. The last button is for checking if the program is up-to-date, of course, the virus definitions are updated automatically. ‘Join us on Facebook‘ link at the top bar is very visible and somehow distracting.

For example, you can disable any one of the firewall settings. Under ‘Preferences’ you can find a number of configuration options. Is avast free antivirus for mac good. You can also change popups or even turn them off, set your updates to how you want them, and even remove the Avast Icon from your toolbar. Use what you want, and nothing else. Configuration One of the best things about Avast is that it is highly configurable, and you can update everything from the notificaitions to the Firewall.

Popularity – Which is the Most Popular Free Antivirus? Avast or AVG?

The better product is, the most users it has. It’s simple as that. However, it’s not easy to say which is the most popular antivirus, if Avast or AVG. For expressing popularity we are using several, publicly accessible methods.

1. Official Sources

According to the official website, Avast is protecting more than 400 million users worldwide, but that probably includes also AVG users. The last publicly available number was 230 million users. AVG doesn’t state anymore how many users are using their products, however using simple math it’s around 170 million (400 – 230 = 170). Therefore we believe it’s safe to claim Avast has more users than AVG.

2. Antivirus Vendor Market Share by OPSWAT

OPSWAT is regularly releasing reports about the antivirus market share. Data are based on the OPSWAT GEARS software installed on the client machines. According to the latest report from November 2017, Avast is dominating the worldwide market with 18.48%. Followed by ESET with 13.97%. AVG is still reported as a separate company and didn’t make it into top 10 for June 2017, however, AVG’s share was around 4% in the last few months. It is also important to mention Microsoft for some reason is not included at all.

3. CNET Download.com Ranking

Download.com by CNET is the World’s most popular download portal. According to its popularity rankings, AVG has more total downloads – almost 564 million, while Avast has ‘only’ 406 million. However, the recent trend shows Avast is slightly more popular, as it leads the last week downloads number.

Avast has higher editor’s rating– 4 stars (meaning excellent), while AVG has 3.5 stars (meaning very good). The user/community rating is also better for Avast – 4.5 stars, while AVG has 4 stars.

Another way how to measure product/company popularity is the number of fans/followers on social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. Avast is leading on Facebook with 4.1 million fans vs. AVG’s 3.1 million. On Twitter, the leader is AVG with 216k followers vs. Avast’s 181k.

Independent Labs Test Results – Will AVG Protect You Better Than Avast?
